Beaches in Broward County
A while ago I posted our reviews of the beaches in Palm Beach County. Since then we've made progress visiting the beaches in Broward County. Here's how our impressions compared to the authors of our beach book, Florida Beaches (published 30 years ago).
Deerfield Public Beach - 5/4/2021 - The authors gave this beach 4 suns, so did we. I particularly enjoyed the occasional rock outcroppings on the beach.
North Ocean Park - 5/26/2021 - They gave it 2 suns; we gave it 3.
Pompano Beach - 8/25/2021 - They gave it 3 suns; we gave it 4.
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea - 9/28/2021 - They gave it 3 suns; we gave it 3 1/2.
Hugh Taylor Birch State Park - 4/19/2022 - They gave it 4 suns, so did we.
Fort Lauderdale Beach - North - 11/3/2021 - They gave it 3 suns, so did we. The parking lot is super tiny, and there are no restrooms.
Fort Lauderdale Beach - Central - 7/28/2022 - They gave it 4 suns, so did we. The cost of parking was a bit steep, but it wasn't a long walk to the large swath of sand.
Fort Lauderdale Beach - South - 3/21/2023 - Florida Beaches gave this beach 5 suns, so did we. There's a reason this is a quintessential spring break destination.
Mizell-Johnson State Park Beach - 7/11/2023 - They gave it 4 suns, we gave it 5. Nice soft sand on a wide beach, lots and lots of parking, and even shaded picnic tables right on the sand.
Dania Beach - 8/15/2023 - They gave it 3 suns, we gave it 4. There's plenty of parking (but you do have to pay $3 per hour); it's a short walk to the actual beach; there are several amenities - lifeguards, restrooms, playground, access to a marina, a restaurant, fishing pier, volleyball courts, and shaded picnic tables (although those are not on the beach).
North Hollywood Beach Park - 3/22/24 - They gave it 4 suns; we gave it 4 1/2. If parking were a bit cheaper, it would have been 5; however, $10 for the day is better than $3 an hour. This park has access to the Hollywood Broadwalk [not boardwalk] with plenty of eating options, and yet it's also only a short walk to the guarded beach with lots of soft sand.
Hallandale Beach North - 10/16/24 - They gave it 4 suns, we gave it only 3. The beach itself wasn't very big and there was zero shade. However, most beaches don't have shade! This is still a great beach; we just liked the south beach better.
Hallandale Beach South - 3/26/25 - This was a great park for the conclusion! They gave it 4 suns, we gave it 5. The sand was nice and soft and it wasn't too far to walk to get to it. Although you did have to pay for parking, we didn't have any problems finding a spot. The restrooms were clean. There's also a playground, sand volleyball court, and even a few picnic tables (before the dunes).
