Great Marsh Trail

The fine print at the Great Marsh trailhead states "Five trails at Indiana Dunes National Park are designated Park Prescription Trails." This is something new to us, but apparently there's a program where doctors prescribe hiking to improve their patients' health. We're so glad we figured out that being out in nature is good for you all on our own! And since we hiked all the trails in the park, we also hiked all five of these special trails.* This particular one was filled with wildflowers, and also had a wheelchair accessible dock overlooking the marshy lake. Now whenever I need a mental boost and can't get outside, maybe I can just scroll through these pictures and feel better.

*Would you like to hike this trail as part of a medical prescription?? Here are the five designated trails in this national park:

  1. Hobart Prairie Grove Trail (where we first noticed the designation)
  2. Calumet Dune Trail (part of the Glenwood Dunes hiking system)
  3. Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk (probably more beneficial once the reconstruction is complete)
  4. Great Marsh Trail (this one)
  5. Bailly/Chellberg Trail (especially the Mnoké Prairie section)
