Loxahatchee Slough - The Sixth Visit

Time for a dike hike! This time it was along the Bluegill Trail next to the C-18 canal from PGA Boulevard - starting at the Sandhill Crane Access Park - to the northern boundary of Loxahatchee Slough Natural Area - 1 1/2 miles from Riverbend Park. (We'll hike that northern segment some other time.) It was a warm and humid day, and our expected 6 1/2 miles turned into 8 1/4 miles, but it was still a beautiful day, and we made it back to the car before any rain fell on us. Most people bike this trail but hiking it worked well also. There were even spots of shade close to the trail, which I wasn't expecting on a dike hike. Enjoy the pictures!

We discovered a little shade structure at the halfway point, then passed a water control structure near the juncture with another canal, then a little (underwhelming) overlook before reaching the kiosk at the boundary.

Every half mile we passed a mileage post.

We decided the boundary was at mile marker 1.5, where another welcome kiosk was located, and where we could see the boundary kiosk across the canal. We passed that one on this hike during our third visit. Then it was time to turn around and retrace our steps!

The end!! Our next hike will start across the street and head south towards Grassy Waters Preserve (although we'll probably stop at the natural area's boundary).
