Acadia - Bar Island Path

Hike #1 in our Acadia hiking book was called Bar Island Path. It goes from the peninsula on the right in the picture below to the island in the center.

This is a unique little trail, that is only accessible during low tide. That means you have to plan your timing of the excursion carefully. After checking the tide tables, we figured the best day to do it would be our last day. However, we like knowing where to start and park, so we checked it out beforehand, on the way to something else.

You have to park on the street in the tiny, tourist-y town of Bar Harbor, but we did find a spot. It's a good thing we weren't planning on crossing at that time, because we would have been swimming!

Later, from our hike on the nearby mountain, we noticed other people making the trek, so we know it's possible. Look closely!

Unfortunately, we left a day early, so this hike (along with the Ocean Path, which I was also looking forward to doing) will have to wait for another visit.
