Exploring Big Cypress Preserve
This week we didn't have to get our feet wet!
The plan for this trip to Big Cypress National Preserve was to drive out to the Nathaniel P. Reed Visitor Center near the western entrance and figure out what else there might be to do in this vast park. The volunteer ranger on duty was quite helpful. It's nice to know that future hikes should be on dry ground. It was also comforting to learn the dirt roads we want to take should be passable without any difficulty. While there we read all the signs and watched the movie about the preserve.
Before heading to our planned picnic at one roadside area, we checked out a couple of other little side roads. One went to a canoe launch, the other to a small campground with ORV (off-road vehicle) access at Burns Lake.
By then it was lunchtime and we were hungry, so we ate before checking out the little boardwalk going into the cypress swamp. Originally 1/2 mile long, it was even less than half that distance, so it didn't take long to get to the end.
