Carlsbad Caverns - The Cavern Part A
As we planned this trip, we were looking forward to experiencing all we could, which included taking several ranger-led cave tours. Imagine our disappointment when we realized all of them had been cancelled. That didn't make us cancel our trip, though, and off we went. Now imagine our delight when we learned that the King's Palace Tour was offered on a day-by-day and first-come-first-served basis. The ranger suggested getting to the visitor center thirty minutes before it opened to try and get a spot. That's what we did the next morning. We were second in line, and they did offer the tour that day!
We met the ranger down in the cavern at the appointed time, and off we went, in a group of about 25. The ranger did a bit more talking and explaining than we would have liked, but at least he was knowledgeable, and so now are we!
One of the more interesting tidbits of information is that they know these tiny stalactites are 94 years old, because that's how long ago they blasted the little tunnel! Most of the formations - or speleothems - are thousands of years old, with no way of positively knowing an actual age.
We were able to visit the King's Palace, the Papoose Room, the Queen's Chamber, and the Green Lake Room. (See the green line route above.) It's not possible to really describe the formations, but it was an incredible experience. And because the lighting is dim, my pictures didn't turn out very well, but at least they help me remember a bit of the experience, and maybe they'll encourage you to go yourself someday!
Before taking the elevator up to then walk down into the cave, we stopped to get some lunch at the little snack shop. The choices were underwhelming - only a regular turkey/cheese sandwich and a few chip and candy options - but the whole idea was to experience eating in a cave. It's quite unique! (And we learned that they used to offer fried chicken, but the raccoons smelled the bones and descended into the cave to make a giant mess. They're very particular about what is served there now.)
