We did spend the night at a local Residence Inn, but the highlight of this month's staycation was touring the
Flagler Museum on a hot and humid day. This is the house, also known as Whitehall, that Henry Flagler built as a wedding gift for his wife, and it was quite magnificent. Although not quite as big as
Versailles - which is actually a good thing for someone wanting to finish their exploration in a day - it was just as opulent and gorgeous, at least in my opinion.
The front door opens into the appropriately named Great Hall, with Henry Flagler himself keeping watch over his guests.
On one side is the library (quite dark) and music room (with lots of art on the walls), with the dining room (under renovation) and drawing room (light and feminine - my favorite room of the mansion) on the other side.
Behind the great hall is the grand ballroom, with a beautiful courtyard in between, and an elegant dark hallway leading to the billiard room.
The bedrooms were upstairs, and each of them was unique and beautiful, although I wouldn't want to sleep in the Yellow Roses Room. One of the rooms displayed various types of lace, something that Mrs. Flagler created and collected. There was also a room dedicated to the history of Henry Flagler, which was quite interesting. Apparently, he invented the business model that allowed commerce to go across state lines (during his Standard Oil days). Then, instead of retiring, he decided to make Florida a winter destination by building a railroad and hotels. He succeeded!
Don't forget to stop at the museum store before you leave! Although the main house is over 100 years old, about 20 years ago, the foundation built a large atrium-type building to house Henry Flagler's personal railcar. I can only imagine the fundraisers that are held there now.
Outside you can relax in one of the only remaining original palm groves remaining in the area.
We had a delightful visit, and maybe someday we'll return. Oh, and as part of this staycation, we enjoyed dinner at Wayne's favorite Thai & Sushi place and lunch at the fun Green's Pharmacy luncheonette.
