Memorable Recipes from 2023

We've reached the end of another year, and 2023 included a fair amount of time spent cooking in the kitchen. I asked Wayne what he thought our more memorable "new" recipes were and he said the lobster and venison ones. Can you tell which sections we were going through in our cookbooks!?

Our New Year's Eve celebratory meal included Crab Croquettes from the freezer.

All of these recipes can be found on our "recipes" blog, but in honor of this annual holiday, I thought I'd include the links here. If your New Year's Resolution includes trying new recipes, here are some to consider!

Most of the recipes we made from the Old-Fashioned Bake Sale Cookbook were repeat variations, which were good, but nothing special. (See, for example, Peanut Butter and Jelly Cookies, Cheesecake Bars, and Red Velvet Cake.) Adding M&M's to brownies or cupcakes is always fun. However, the best new dessert of 2023 was definitely the Grasshopper Mint Pie

From our Dutch Oven Cookbook, we tried a couple more variations of the venison ribs, using beef short ribs, but even with our alterations, they were still pretty sour, so I doubt they'll be on the menu in the future. We won't be making Venison Jerky again, either. However, the Dutch Oven Venison Steaks were delicious! Next up will be a chicken-fried version of them.

We started the Fish and Seafood section of our Columbia Restaurant Cookbook over three years ago, with Pargo Asado, but we finally finished making all the recipes (and their variations) from that section in December. Croquetas de Jaiba de Ybor City (or Crab Croquettes) was definitely a production!

We won't soon forget the lobster recipes, either - Langosta Rellena, which really wasn't stuffed lobster, and Langosta a la Catalana, which called for six lobster tails!

This year we tried several new shrimp dishes: Sauteed Shrimp, Garlic Shrimp, and Shrimp in Tomato Sauce. All of them were amazingly delicious.

Snapper Alicante, with its extra garnishes, was a fabulous dish. We'll have to remember to have it again!

Now that we've finished all the fish dishes in that cookbook, we'll be trying the beans and rice recipes. Our budget will definitely appreciate that. So, on to 2024! What new delicacies will we discover this year?
