Last year as we drove across Texas, we kept seeing these billboards advertising a free 72-ounce steak at the Big Texan restaurant in Amarillo. They were quite intriguing, so we looked into it.
Of course, there is some fine print! However, if you're able to eat the entire humongous steak, along with a baked potato, roll, salad and shrimp cocktail, within a one-hour time limit, your money is refunded. Surprisingly, over 10,000 people have accomplished this feat! Read all about that here.
We were just driving through last year, but this year, we decided to spend the night in Amarillo, and have dinner at the Big Texan. Wayne wasn't interested in accepting the challenge, but he was interested in ordering the giant steak, and then having leftovers for a few days.
This is definitely a tourist attraction (you can
buy your own steak plate for $30), but while that normally bothers me, this time it was just part of the fun experience. And even though we went on Halloween (so the waiters were in costumes), the establishment was already decorated for Christmas!
We were seated at a table on the balcony, which meant we had a good view of the dining-hall below, and even a bit of the kitchen. If anyone had been attempting the challenge that night, we could have seen them, too, but I guess the challengers were busy trick-or-treating.
Our waitress said we could order the 72-ounce steak, but she didn't recommend it; it actually isn't a very good cut of meat, and it cost $250.00. Wayne agreed with her! He ordered the Lone Star Steak and I had the Big Texas Strip, which still gave us leftovers for the next night. While not quite as delicious as steaks at Okeechobee Steakhouse, they were still quite good, and we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner. We even saved some room for dessert!
We made some great memories on our little stop in Amarillo, Texas, one of the cities on Route 66. Should we add driving all of Route 66 to our bucket list?
