Bermuda Cruise - Fort Scaur on the Railway Trail

It's a good idea to start a new project at the beginning, so we did. In this case we got off the bus in Somerset to find the first section of the Railway Trail. The directions we had were not clear at all, so the first path we chose was the wrong one. It went by a couple of houses, then ended at the main road. After retracing our steps, and going a bit further down Beacon Hill Road, we found the obvious start. From there to Wharf Road by the Someset Bridge was about two miles - a perfect distance for a nice afternoon stroll.

The wrong path!

The right path!

We had beautiful views of the Great Sound, and when we came across some steps leading down, we just had to take them, and discovered they took us down to the water's edge.

Then it was off to Fort Scaur, which is accessed from the Railway Trail by a little hiking trail up the hill.

The views from the fort were spectacular; we could even see our cruise ship in the distance.

Before heading back to the Railway Trail, I decided to see if I could find a restroom. Success! And isn't it a pretty hidden walkway!!

The next section of trail was just as pretty, and ended with this staircase. It took us a bit, but we figured out that the metal guide was to help bikes go up and down the steps. Isn't that ingenius?

We ended our exploration at the Somerset Bridge - the smallest drawbridge in the world! It's only eighteen inchese wide, just enough to let the mast of a sailing boat through.

If we ever make it back to Bermuda, we'll take the bus to the Somerset Bridge stop, and start walking the trail again, at this tall palm tree behind the yellow building. I wonder if that will ever happen!
