A Springtime Hike in Virginia

We've taken a couple of hikes already at Grayson Highlands State Park (read about one of them here), but those have been on Thanksgiving trips. It was a real pleasure to try one in the springtime.

The Cabin Creek Trail starts at the little parking lot found where the spur road to the stables leaves the main road. The almost two-mile loop follows a creek for a good portion of the trail and includes a couple of beautiful waterfalls along the way.

Here's one of those beautiful waterfalls.

It took some bushwacking to get there, but the "overlook" did provide some more beautiful views.

My guess is that this is a fishing shelter, although it would make more sense to me to have it facing the river and not the trail.

As you can see, the scenery along the trail was gorgeous.

It was kind of cool to notice Big Pinnacle through the trees. We hiked to the top of that mountain on our last trip to the park.

After taking a few pictures from around the parking area, we decided to take advantage of the fact that the gate wasn't closed for snow, and drove to the end of the road where the Virgil J. Fox Visitor Center is located.

And then we checked out the trail head for our next hike, the Haws Flat Trail, which is near the entrance of the park.

However, after we got home, I found a brochure for the Cabin Creek Nature Trail. That would explain why we saw the occasional numbered post. It's too bad there weren't any brochures at the trail head, and it's too bad I didn't notice before we took the hike, because we need to take it again, and the Haws Flat Trail will have to wait a bit longer. However, I commented during the hike that this would be a fun one to do once a month, just to see the changes the seasons bring. I guess I'll get my wish!
