WFMW - A Very, Merry Unbirthday to You!

Celebrating Half-Birthdays
You remember the song from "Alice in Wonderland" - "A Very Merry Unbirthday" don't you? Sometimes it's fun to celebrate someone's birthday even when it's not really their birthday! Half-Birthdays are particularly good excuses for that. And as you can see from the pictures below, it's not a unique tradition:

Today is David's Half-Birthday! If you were around we'd probably even bake a half-cake for you.

Because he has a winter-time birthday, there were a few years when he was growing up when we deliberately saved some of his birthday budget for six months later and then took him to the toy store in June so he could get some summer toys like water guns and pool floats. For some reason it doesn't seem like so much of a problem for summer birthdays (probably because of Christmas).

Each member of our family is unique, and it's always fun to look for ways to celebrate that. This is just one that works for us. Go here to find ideas that work for other families.

I have a January birthday boy - so we have done this as well - another thing we have done is we have given him summer clothes/toys for his birthday and saved them up. - This can be tricky when they are in a growth spurt - but it can be cheaper when you buy clearance items in the fall for his summer clothes. My other two are summer babies so we are "lucky" there - except they are a month apart - so we plan 2 summer parties!! Like your blog a lot - will visit again!

This is a great idea. We have a December birthday boy, but never quite followed through on the summer party idea. I love your half-cakes :)

All 3 of my college roomates had summer birthdays which meant we were not together to celebrate. We solved this by doing half birthdays and other odd fraction birthdays (even a 5/12 to prevent interference with Christmas break)which allowed for the surprise factor as well! We never thought to do the half cakes, though! Good thinking!

We have two December birthdays at our house, so we are considering doing the same thing. Glad to hear it works!
