WFMW - Easy Cake Removal

Using wax paper to make cakes easy to remove

How's that for a title?  I know it's been a while since I've posted a "works for me" tip, but yesterday as I was baking our Valentine's Day dessert, it dawned on me that this would be an excellent hint to share, so I took a few pictures!  I'm not sure where I learned it, because I've been using it for years, but this one really works.  If you want to get your cakes out of the pans easily, all you have to do is line them with wax paper.  
 1) Tear off a sheet of wax paper large enough for your pan.  I'm using mini ones here, so one little strip is enough for all three.  If you're using regular-sized pans, it's easier to do one square per pan.
 2) Trace around the outside of the pan with a pen.  It doesn't matter if the pen actually works, and I've even used the point of the scissors, because you can see the scratch mark.  (I didn't take a picture of the drawing, because I don't have a third hand.  You need one to trace and one to hold the pan in place.)
 3) Cut out your shapes.
 4) "Glue" them into place with a squirt of Pam or brush of shortening (whatever you normally use).
5) Pour in your batter, bake, cool for 5-10 minutes, then flip them over and remove the cakes from the pan.  Peel off the wax paper and throw it away.  That's it!  (You can find the recipe I used for the cake here.)

This week I learned that if you put bay leaves in your flour (or other grains, I guess), then the bugs will stay out. I'm still trying it myself, but thought I'd share.
