Question Time

Works for Me Wednesday - Backwards Edition
This week over at We are THAT Family, instead of sharing answers, it's time to share questions. So, here's my question:
How do you plan your dinner menu for the month? or week? or year???
I posted our plan here a while ago, but we're putting together a class on meal planning, and I thought it was time to revisit the subject. In spite of having a plan, recently I've had too many "what do I fix for dinner now?" days and so maybe it's time for a change. Even if I go back to our reliable method, I think I'll be excited about it again if I evaluate it against some other choices. So, I'm looking forward to your suggestions!

I don't really plan dinners. I don't even cook in our house. I just tell the hubby what I feel like eating and he makes it for us :D

I'm very bad. I don't plan ahead. I usually just think about it the day of. But I usually have most of the things on hand that I use on a regular basis. My problem with planning is that I don't always feel like eating the things on the plan. Sometimes I plan while I'm shopping. I find things for a few meals, then I plan to cook those two or three things. My problem is that I HATE thinking of what to cook! I don't mind cooking as much as I mind thinking of what to cook. That's probably why I don't plan.

I try to plan about a week at a time, but don't always stick to it. What I would like to try is coming up with a large list of breakfasts, lunches & dinners that we like and then just simply selecting from the list each week before shopping.

I also try to keep some ingredients on hand for quick easy meals as a backup.

i plan for a month (since recently) every week I write it a notepad I keep on the fridge. I don't make anything specific to one day that way I can change as needed or wanted.

To save money once a week I serve beans and rice, soup and an Italian meal with little meat. The rest of the days I use the pantry principle. Buying food at a low price and figuring out what to cook from there. For example this week hamburger is on sale so I'll buy several pounds even though I don't know what I'm going to do with it yet.

I like to try new recipes so I collect the recipes and buy the ingredients when they go on sale. Sometimes it takes a month before I try one specific recipe.

I try a few different methods... I've done the planning for a month. But I find that when I'm using coupons and shopping sales, it's easier to plan for the week. So that's what I do right now - sit down with the ads on Sunday night, plan the meals for the week based around the sales and shop on Monday or Tuesday.

I used to do a month at a time, but now with our ever-changing schedules, a week is about all I can handle. I usually try to do a meatless night and a soup/crockpot dish on the two busiest nights as we usually eat in shifts. AND, now I am trying to work in a CORN (Clean Out Refrigerator Night).

I ALWAYS have to remind myself and everyone else in the house that "we have a plan, but the plan is ALWAYS subject to change."

That's what is working for us...at this point anyway...:)
