Lightbringer

I learned something new this morning! Which shouldn't be surprising, because I'm always learning new things, but this was unexpected.

In seminary today we studied Isaiah 13-14. For one of the activities I gave the kids a few references and told them to come up with at least eight different names or titles for Satan. Their list included "Lightbringer" and "Son of the Morning" which surprised me. I had gone over the scriptures yesterday and didn't see any names with nice, positive connotations. So we looked up "Lucifer" in the Bible Dictionary and discovered that it literally means the Shining One. That was Satan's name before his rebellion. It shows me the hope Heavenly Father originally had for him.

The whole purpose of learning about Satan is so we can be prepared to stand strong in the face of temptation. There are a lot of scriptures to help us with that. Just a few include 1 Corinthians 10:13 (God will not suffer you to be tempted above what you are able), Joshua 24:15 (choose you this day whom ye will serve), Moroni 7:16-17 (good comes from Christ, evil comes from Satan), and the class favorite: D&C 10:5 (pray always that you may conquer Satan).

Then we came up with names and titles for Christ: Savior, Redeemer, Lord of Hosts, Holy One of Israel, Immanuel, Lamb of God, Only Begotten, God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Lord Jehovah, Wonderful, Counselor, the Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace. Even though our discussion just scratched the surface, it was enough to see the Spirit testify to these youth that they know who the real "light bringer" is, and that they have a responsibility to follow the Savior and be a shining example for others.
